Pseudancistrus genisetiger (6-8 cm)
"Slate Pleco" - South American catfish, sought-after loricariid
The Pseudancistrus genisetiger is a loricariid native to the Rio Jaguaribe basin (State of Ceará, Brazil). This relatively rare aquarium species is characterised by its grey to dark coat, often conspicuous behaviour and maintenance requirements that call for very high quality water.
Behaviour & maintenance
- Habitats: bottom-dwelling fish frequenting streams with moderate to strong currents and rocky or gravelly substrates.
- It can be semi-territorial, especially adult males, and requires several hiding places.
- Recommended for aquarists with a well-cycled tank and good control over water parameters.
Diet
- Mainly herbivorous / biofilm grazer: algae, aufwuchs, plant matter, supplemented with specific pellets for loricariids.
- Also accepts supplements rich in plant matter but low in protein, to avoid metabolic imbalances.
Water quality
- Temperature: around 26 - 30°C, depending on the source.
- pH: around 6.0 - 7.0, soft to slightly acidic/neutral water.
- Clean, well-filtered water with good water exchange; this species does not tolerate unstable parameters.
Setting & environment
- Sandy soil or medium gravel, rocky areas or submerged roots, caves or branches for shelter.
- Recommended volume: for an individual or a well-established pair, a tank of at least 100 litres (or more, depending on the population). Juveniles measuring 6-8 cm will adapt, but you need to keep their adult size in mind.
- Ensure a good flow of water or a moderate current, inspired by its natural habitat.

Aquabota tip
To succeed with Pseudancistrus genisetiger, place it in a mature tank with very stable water, add several hiding places (rocks, roots) and check the parameters regularly. When it reaches adulthood, make sure the décor is robust, as it likes to attach itself to surfaces and can move small items around. Avoid too many or too aggressive cohabitants. Make regular water changes (~20% / week) and monitor the overall quality to limit any stress.
