Leporacanthicus joselimai "L264" (3 cm)
Pléco "Sultan" - a rare, majestic species reserved for enthusiasts
Leporacanthicus joselimai, also known as L264 Sultan Pleco, is a bottom-dwelling catfish with a creamy coat and black spots, native to the Rio Tapajós (Brazil). Very popular with Loricariidae enthusiasts, it combines a majestic appearance, discreet behaviour and great ornamental potential.
Behaviour & maintenance
This fish is territorial but calm, and should be kept alone or in pairs in an aquarium of at least 150 litres. It is nocturnal and solitary, and likes many dark hiding places. It can cohabit with other Loricariidae provided it has several shelters and a good surface area.
Diet
A specialist carnivore, it feeds on :
- Bloodworms, artemia, mussels, frozen prawns
- Protein bottom pellets
- Specific pellets for benthic carnivores
It does not eat algae. Avoid overly vegetable foods. Food should preferably be distributed in the evening.
Water quality
- Ideal temperature: 26 - 30°C
- pH: 6.4 - 7.4
- GH: 4 - 10 °dGH
- KH: 2 - 6 °KH
- Conductivity: 150 - 300 µS
The Sultan Pleco needs warm, well-oxygenated, nitrate-free water. A specific conditioner can be used to soften the water if necessary.
Decor & environment
Provide a sandy or neutral substrate, rocks, hollow roots and tubes so that it can hide. Avoid overpowering lighting. Compatible plants: Anubias, Bucephalandra, or floating plants to filter the light.
