Leporinus Fasciatus 5-6cm Wild(Leporinus fasciatus)
Lively, robust striped fish for large freshwater aquariums
The Leporinus Fasciatus 5-6cm Wild(Leporinus fasciatus) is a South American characiforme recognisable by its black vertical stripes on a yellow background. Offered here in 5-6 cm (young wild specimens), it will fit into our freshwater world but requires a large, well-filtered and correctly-sized aquarium, like our well-equipped aquariums.
Behaviour & maintenance
Leporinus fasciatus is an active fish , a powerful swimmer, with a rather territorial temperament with its fellow fish and some fish of similar size.
- Its lively behaviour can intimidate species that are too calm or smaller.
- Best kept in small groups in large tanks, or as a single specimen with robust fish of a similar size.
- Perfectly covered tank: very good jumper.
An aquarium of at least 300 litres is required for a young group, and more when they reach adulthood. Strong filtration, good mixing and well-oxygenated water are necessary. Use starter bacteria to stabilise the cycle and check your parameters regularly with water tests.
Diet
An omnivorous species with a strong plant component. It accepts a wide variety of foods but tends to nibble soft plants.
- Complete pellets for South American fish, sticks and blister foods.
- Plant supplements (courgette, cucumber, poached spinach, foods rich in spirulina).
- As a supplement: frozen or live prey (artemia, krill, etc.) without excess to avoid being overweight.
See our adapted foods. In planted tanks, choose robust species and support them with aquarium fertiliser.
Water quality
- Ideal temperature: 24 - 28°C
- pH: 6.0 - 7.5
- GH: 3 - 15 °dGH
- KH: 1 - 8 °KH
- Conductivity: 100 - 400 µS
Before use, treat the water with a water conditioner. Regularly monitor your parameters via our water tests and carry out weekly water changes (20-30%) to ensure good water quality.
Decor & environment
In its natural habitat, the Leporinus inhabits rivers and areas with currents and numerous obstacles.
- Aquarium substrate such as sand or rounded gravel to limit injury.
- Roots, rocks and branches to provide hiding places and break the current.
- Robust plants (fixed to the decor or in protected areas) to limit nibbling.
For the right décor, choose an aquarium substrate, natural plants and appropriate lighting, and complete the picture with our decorations.
