Channa bleheri  (Channa bleheri)

Colourful dwarf snakehead for experienced aquarists – species tank recommended

Channa bleheri (Channa bleheri), commonly known as the rainbow snakehead, is a small predatory fish from the Brahmaputra basin in north-eastern India. Our specimens are currently 4–5 cm but will reach 15–18 cm as adults. This is not a typical community fish; it is best suited to a well-equipped species aquarium within our freshwater range.

Behavior and care

This territorial predator is relatively calm but can show strong intraspecific interactions. Channa bleheri is best kept as a species-only fish (single specimen, bonded pair or small group in a large tank). Small fish and invertebrates are easily seen as prey.

For a pair we recommend at least 200 liters, with a moderate water depth and plenty of hiding places (driftwood, rocks, caves/tubes). The species also breathes atmospheric air, so always leave an air gap between the water surface and the lid. Provide efficient filtration with gentle flow, support the biological balance with starter bacteria and monitor water values using water tests.

This is a subtropical species that appreciates a cooler winter period (16–18 °C) and moderate temperatures for the rest of the year (18–24 °C). Avoid prolonged high temperatures (> 26 °C). A tight-fitting lid is absolutely essential, as these fish are excellent jumpers.

Diet

A true carnivore, Channa bleheri enjoys a protein-rich diet: earthworms, insect larvae, crustaceans, frozen foods (brine shrimp, krill, mysis, mussel and shrimp pieces) and high-quality carnivore pellets. Dry foods are often only accepted after a transition period.

For optimal health, vary the diet using our selected foods to support growth, immunity and coloration. Feed 3–4 times per week in small portions to avoid obesity and water pollution. Avoid low-quality feeder fish and very fatty meats.

Water parameters

  • Ideal temperature: 18 – 24 °C (cooler in winter)
  • pH: 6.0 – 7.5
  • GH: 4 – 12 °dGH
  • KH: 2 – 8 °dKH
  • Conductivity: 100 – 350 µS

Before adding the fish, treat tap water with an appropriate water conditioner. Use efficient filtration with gentle flow (internal filters) and perform regular maintenance (maintenance tools, weekly water changes) to ensure a healthy environment. The species is sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters, so prefer frequent but moderate water changes.

Decor and environment

Use a dark aquarium substrate, plenty of robust live plants and floating plants to diffuse the light. Add hardscape decorations (driftwood, rocks, leaves) to create visually separated territories and shaded refuges.

A rather subdued lighting system is preferable to very intense light. Always leave a moist air space under the lid to allow for air breathing.
