Oliver Knott's Nature Soil black fine-grain is entirely obtained from natural soils, machine-shaped into soil grains, and then baked at a low temperature for a firmer structure. This active substrate has been designed for planted aquariums under the guidance of Oliver Knott. This pre-fertilized soil provides your aquatic plants with all the essential nutrients through the roots, ensuring intensely bright leaf colors, strong and healthy growth, and visible vitality to your plants. Oliver Knott's Nature Soil is self-sufficient. No addition of powders or beads, no complicated substrate composition: add the soil directly, and you're good to go.

The fine black Nature Soil is suitable for both novice and advanced aquascapers and aquarium enthusiasts. This plant-based soil reduces water hardness and actively lowers the pH value. Many commonly used aquarium plants in hobbyist aquariums prefer soft and slightly acidic water. They will thrive with Oliver Knott's Nature Soil! This convenient substrate is also ideal for ornamental fish and shrimp that require soft water as it lowers the pH to a slightly acidic value, below 7, and decreases carbonate hardness.

The granules of the fine black Nature Soil are baked at a low temperature, stable in water, and do not disintegrate even after a long period in the aquarium. They make the aquarium water clearer and can absorb foreign substances, making them harmless. The fine granulation of the soil is suitable as a top layer on a coarser soil layer in the aquarium, where foreground roots can grow well, or as substrate in a nano-aquarium.

Thanks to the shape of the granules, plant roots always receive enough oxygen and nutrients, and the soil does not compact. Their efficiency is enhanced by combining them with an undergravel filter or floor heating. Proper flow stimulates bacterial activity in the soil and helps essential filter bacteria break down pollutants in the aquarium water. Nature Soil thus ensures the biological stability of the water.

Oliver Knott's Nature Soil can also be used as a filtering medium in the filter. Here too, the active soil unfolds its properties and makes the water softer.

How much Nature Soil for your aquarium?

  • 60 cm: 10 liters
  • 80 cm: 15 liters
  • 100 cm: 25 liters
  • 120 cm: 30 liters

Note: The active soil does not need to be rinsed before use in the aquarium. Hard tap water can lead to fluctuations in water hardness and changes in pH when changing water. Shrimp can be quite sensitive to these phenomena. So, in a planted aquarium with Nature Soil and shrimp, use osmosis water and a softening salt such as SaltyShrimp Bee Shrimp Mineral GH+ if tap water is hard. Such short-term fluctuations generally do not harm aquarium plants and ornamental fish.

Burrowing fish like corydoras, some catfish, or perch can disturb the soil so much that stirred particles continuously cloud the water. These fish are therefore not really suitable for a soil aquarium.
