Lionhead (Carassius auratus var. Lionhead)

Exceptional fancy goldfish with fleshy head growth, elegant and peaceful

The Lionhead (Carassius auratus var. Lionhead) is a prestigious goldfish variety developed through Asian selective breeding. It is easily recognised by its voluminous head growth, called the “wen”, and the absence of a dorsal fin. With its regal appearance and graceful swimming, it is a highly ornamental, peaceful fish, ideal for family aquariums or small outdoor ponds during the warm season.

Behavior & care

The Lionhead is a calm and sociable fish. Like the Ranchu, it swims slowly due to its rounded body shape and lack of dorsal fin. It should be kept with similar fancy varieties (Ranchu, Pom Pom, Oranda) in a peaceful environment without strong currents. A minimum of 60 L per fish is recommended in a well-filtered tank with stable temperature.

For more information on goldfish care, see our guide: Goldfish care guide.

Feeding

As an omnivore, the Lionhead eats flakes, floating or sinking pellets and fresh foods. It particularly benefits from premium goldfish foods rich in spirulina and carotenoids, which support healthy “wen” growth. Offer several small meals per day to avoid digestive issues.

Water parameters

  • Ideal temperature: 18 – 24 °C
  • pH: 6.8 – 7.5
  • GH: 6 – 12 °dGH
  • KH: 4 – 8 °KH
  • Conductivity: 300 – 600 µS

Before introducing the fish, treat the water with a water conditioner to neutralise chlorine and heavy metals. Ensure good oxygenation and gentle but efficient filtration.

Décor & environment

Choose a fine sand substrate to protect its delicate mouth and fins. Use hardy aquatic plants such as Anubias or Cryptocoryne, and avoid sharp decorations. Soft lighting and low flow are ideal.
