The Ryukin(Carassius auratus var. Ryukin) is an elegant variety of goldfish native to Japan. Distinguished by its high, rounded back and long, majestic fins, it is also very hardy and brightly coloured (red, white, calico, orange...). It is a peaceful, sociable ornamental fish, perfect for family aquariums or temperate outdoor ponds.

Behaviour & maintenance

The Ryukin is a calm, curious and gregarious fish. It likes to live in groups and adapts well to life in aquariums and ponds. However, its compact morphology makes it less agile than the common goldfish: avoid keeping it with species that are too fast. It is best kept in an aquarium of at least 60 litres per fish, with a gentle current and good filtration.

Diet

An omnivore, the Ryukin likes flakes, pellets and fresh food. To maintain its health and colour, offer it a varied diet with goldfish foods rich in spirulina and carotenoids. Feed him several times a day with small rations adapted to his swimming rhythm.

Before introduction, treat the water with a water conditioner to neutralise chlorine and heavy metals. Regular maintenance (weekly 20% change) ensures clear, healthy water.

Decor & environment

Install fine sand and hardy aquatic plants such as Anubias or Vallisneria. Avoid sharp rocks and strong currents that could tire out its fins. Soft lighting and appropriate filtration will ensure its well-being.
