Corbicula javanicus Gold 1–2 cm (Corbicula javanica)
Golden freshwater clam – burrowing filter feeder for mature aquariums
Corbicula javanicus Gold 1–2 cm (Corbicula javanica) is a freshwater clam with a golden/beige shell, appreciated for its role as a natural filter feeder in the aquarium. Our 1–2 cm specimens are young/sub-adult clams that will reach about 3–4 cm as adults. They belong to our freshwater range and are suitable for well-established aquariums with stable biology.
Behavior and care
This species is peaceful, burrowing and filter feeding. Corbicula javanica partially buries itself in the substrate and filters the water for organic micro-particles. It is best kept in a small group (3–5 specimens or more) in a well-oxygenated tank with gentle current.
For a small group we recommend at least 40–60 liters in a fully cycled, stable aquarium (not in newly set-up tanks) with a fine substrate. At start-up, use starter bacteria and regularly monitor water values with water tests. Avoid large digging or predatory fish that could dislodge or damage the clams.
As a filter feeder, the species is sensitive to chronic lack of food in very “clean” or heavily overfiltered aquariums: make sure there are regular micro-particles available in the water column.
Diet
Corbicula javanica is primarily a filter feeder, consuming micro-algae, bacteria, infusoria and fine suspended particles. In the aquarium it is advisable to supplement with finely ground foods or powder foods for invertebrates, and if needed liquid foods designed for filter feeders.
Feed tiny amounts into the current (for example near the filter outlet) using our invertebrate foods. Avoid overfeeding: most of the particles should be quickly used by the clams, microfauna and other tank inhabitants.
Water parameters
- Ideal temperature: 20 – 28 °C
- pH: 6.5 – 8.0
- GH: 5 – 15 °dGH
- KH: 3 – 10 °dKH
- Conductivity: 150 – 500 µS
Corbicula javanica prefers well-oxygenated water, neutral to slightly alkaline. Before adding the clams, treat tap water with an appropriate water conditioner. Use a suitable filtration system providing gentle to moderate flow and maintain the tank with proper maintenance tools and weekly water changes.
Absolutely avoid copper-based medications and aggressive treatments for invertebrates.
Decor and environment
Use a aquarium substrate that is fine and non-abrasive (sand, very small rounded gravel) so the clams can bury themselves without injury. A layout with some stones and driftwood will help channel the current and create calmer areas.
Live plants contribute to overall tank stability. Avoid frequently moving the clams: let them choose their preferred spot. Complete the layout with stable decorations and a suitable lighting system adapted to the rest of the livestock.

AquaBota tip
To keep your Corbicula javanicus Gold healthy, combine a fine substrate, well-oxygenated water and regular micro-feeding without overloading the system.
Stability = success: monitor your water values with water tests and avoid any copper-based treatments.
