Chromobotia macracanthus 4–5 cm Wild (Chromobotia macracanthus)

Wild clown loach – peaceful but very active, for large community aquariums

Chromobotia macracanthus 4–5 cm Wild (Chromobotia macracanthus), commonly known as the clown loach, is a shoaling bottom-dweller from Sumatra and Borneo. The fish offered here are wild-caught (Wild) and require careful acclimation. At 4–5 cm they are juveniles; as adults they easily reach 20–30 cm and therefore need a very large aquarium in the long term. They belong to our freshwater range and are suitable for large, well-equipped aquariums.

Behavior and care

Clown loaches are peaceful but very active and must be kept in a group of at least 5–6 individuals to reduce stress and excessive dominance. They are mainly crepuscular/nocturnal and appreciate many hiding places (driftwood, caves, tubes, leaf litter).

For a group we recommend at least 400 liters in the medium term, and ideally more for fully grown adults. Provide a moderate to strong current and well oxygenated water. The substrate must be fine and non-abrasive to protect the barbels (sand or very smooth gravel). Use starter bacteria and check your water values regularly with water tests.

Wild-caught fish are often more sensitive to stress and internal/external parasites, so acclimate them slowly, avoid nitrite spikes and consider a quarantine period if needed.

Diet

As an omnivore with a strong insectivorous tendency, Chromobotia macracanthus sifts through the substrate for worms, larvae, small crustaceans and leftover food. They usually accept sinking pellets, bottom tablets, frozen foods (brine shrimp, bloodworms, krill) and occasionally blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber).

For optimal health and coloration, vary the diet using our dedicated foods. Feed several small meals per day, ensuring that food reaches the bottom. Avoid overfeeding, which quickly degrades water quality.

Water parameters

  • Ideal temperature: 26 – 30 °C
  • pH: 6.0 – 7.5
  • GH: 3 – 12 °dGH
  • KH: 1 – 8 °dKH
  • Conductivity: 80 – 250 µS

Clown loaches prefer warm, well-oxygenated, soft to moderately hard water with low nitrate levels. Before adding the fish, treat tap water with an appropriate water conditioner. Use efficient filtration with a noticeable flow (suitable filters) and perform regular maintenance (maintenance tools, weekly water changes). The species is very sensitive to nitrite and incorrectly dosed medications.

Decor and environment

Use a fine aquarium substrate (sand or very fine gravel), plenty of decorations (driftwood, caves, stable rocks) and avoid excessively bright lighting. Robust live plants (Microsorum, Anubias, Cryptocoryne) can be attached to the hardscape.

A suitable lighting system with shaded areas (driftwood, tall plants) will help the loaches feel secure. Provide hiding spots large enough to accommodate several fish at once.
