Cherax alciae "Red Kong" (6–8 cm)
Dwarf ornamental crayfish – intense red colouration and peaceful temperament
Cherax alciae "Red Kong" is a dwarf freshwater crayfish from Papua New Guinea, selectively bred for its vivid bright-red colour and metallic sheen. It is a hardy, decorative and relatively peaceful species, ideal for aquarists looking for an unusual invertebrate for a tropical aqua-terrarium.
Behaviour and care
Cherax alciae is territorial but not aggressive towards calm bottom-dwelling fish. Each individual should have a well-structured area (rocks, roots, tubes) in which to establish its territory. A tank of at least 80 L for a pair is recommended. Males may show dominance towards each other: keep only one male per tank, or a harem (1 ♂ / 2 ♀).
Feeding
An opportunistic omnivore, the Red Kong accepts a wide range of foods: sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, worms, frozen shrimp, or crustacean tablets.
A varied diet promotes a strong shell and intense colouration. Avoid overfeeding, which can quickly pollute the water.
Water quality
- Ideal temperature: 23 – 28 °C
- pH: 7.0 – 8.0
- GH: 8 – 15 °dGH
- KH: 4 – 10 °KH
- Conductivity: 250 – 600 µS
Clear, well-oxygenated and mineral-rich water is essential for their health. Use a crustacean-specific water conditioner to neutralise chlorine and support shell strength.
Décor and environment
Provide a sandy substrate and plenty of hiding places: roots, caves, rocks, ceramic tubes. These elements help prevent conflicts and make moulting easier. Hardy plants (Anubias, Microsorum, Bucephalandra) can be attached to the décor.
Dim lighting and dark shelters are particularly appreciated.

AquaBota tip
Provide several hiding places to reduce stress during moulting: at this time the crayfish is vulnerable and needs to be able to hide.
A piece of limestone rock or a mineral supplement will help the shell regenerate properly.
