Female Siamese fighting fish for warm, planted, low-flow aquariums
The Betta splendens female (Betta splendens) is a small labyrinth fish with vibrant colours and a strong personality, usually slightly less aggressive than the male. She is part of our freshwater range and is best suited to warm, planted aquariums with gentle flow.
Female bettas are still territorial fish, especially towards each other, but are generally more tolerant than males. They can be kept:
Provide at least 20 litres for a single female and 60 litres or more for a group. The aquarium should be calm, with gentle current, stable temperature and a tight-fitting lid (bettas can jump and breathe air at the surface). Use starter bacteria when cycling and monitor water quality with our water tests.
Betta splendens is a carnivorous insect-eater. It thrives on floating betta pellets, frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms in moderation) and other small meaty foods.
Feed 2–3 small meals per day without overfeeding, to avoid obesity and swim bladder issues. Supplement the diet with our high-quality foods for bettas and carnivorous fish.
Females prefer soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water with stable warmth. Before adding fish, treat tap water with an appropriate water conditioner. Provide gentle but efficient filtration and maintain the tank using our maintenance tools and small weekly water changes.
Female bettas feel secure in a densely planted aquarium with plenty of live plants (mosses, stem plants, Cryptocoryne, Anubias…) and floating plants to diffuse the light.
Use a fine substrate and add some roots, smooth stones and caves. A moderate lighting system is sufficient and shows off the colours nicely.
