Garra flavatra 2–3 cm (Garra flavatra), commonly known as the panda garra, is an active bottom/midwater fish from fast-flowing rivers in Myanmar. At 2–3 cm these are juveniles; adults typically reach 7–10 cm. This species is part of our freshwater range and thrives in well-filtered, highly oxygenated aquariums with a good current.
Behavior and care
Garra flavatra is lively yet generally peaceful. It spends much of the day grazing on algae and biofilm on stones, roots and glass. Mild territorial sparring between conspecifics is normal, especially between males, but is usually harmless in a suitably sized, structured tank.
Keep this species in a group of 4–6 or more. We recommend at least 120 litres in a long tank with strong filtration and a noticeable flow, replicating its river habitat. Use starter bacteria when cycling and monitor the water with our water tests.
Diet
Garra flavatra is an omnivorous algae grazer. In nature it feeds on soft algae, biofilm and small organisms. In the aquarium, offer mainly vegetable-based wafers and tablets (spirulina, algae), supplemented with quality omnivore pellets and some frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, small crustaceans).
Vary the diet using our specialised foods for bottom and algae-grazing fish. Feed once or twice daily, ensuring food reaches the bottom. Do not rely solely on natural algae as a food source.
Water parameters
- Ideal temperature: 22 – 27 °C
- pH: 6.5 – 7.8
- GH: 5 – 15 °dGH
- KH: 3 – 10 °dKH
- Conductivity: 120 – 400 µS
This river fish prefers clean, well-oxygenated water with a steady current. Before adding the fish, treat tap water with an appropriate water conditioner. Provide efficient filtration and regular maintenance using maintenance tools and weekly water changes.
Decor and environment
Recreate a rocky stream with a bottom of sand or smooth gravel, stones, boulders and driftwood that provide grazing surfaces. Add plenty of hardy plants (Microsorum, Anubias, Cryptocoryne) attached to the decor.
A moderate to fairly strong lighting system will encourage a light growth of algae they can graze on. Provide some calmer resting spots even in a generally fast-flowing setup.

For thriving Garra flavatra, focus on strong flow, high oxygen levels and a rocky layout with plenty of grazing surfaces. Always supplement natural algae with a balanced prepared diet.
