Channa sp. "Laos Fireback"
A spectacular snakefish with flamboyant colours, for a well-secured, species-specific aquarium
Channa sp. "Laos Fireback" is a snakehead fish particularly sought after for its intense colouring, predatory appearance and fascinating behaviour. This form, still relatively uncommon in the aquarium trade, captivates with its metallic sheen, orange to reddish hues and powerful build.
Intended for experienced aquarists, this Channa requires a dedicated, well-structured tank with plenty of hiding places and a perfectly secure lid. It is a fish with character, territorial in nature, which reveals its full potential in a calm, dimly lit tank designed for its lifestyle.
1. Behaviour & care
The Channa "Laos Fireback" is a species with a strong temperament. It can be territorial, particularly as an adult or during the breeding season. It is generally advisable to keep it alone or in a pair, in a dedicated aquarium.
Like many Channa species, it enjoys a calm environment, shaded areas, roots, driftwood and hiding places. It also has the ability to breathe air to some extent, which means you must allow access to the surface whilst keeping the tank securely covered, as it can jump.
- Behaviour: territorial, predatory, observant
- Lifestyle: generally solitary or in compatible pairs
- Recommended level: intermediate to experienced aquarists
- Tank type: a dedicatedtank is recommended
2. Adult size & recommended tank volume
Channa sp. "Laos Fireback" can reach around 20 to 25 cm in adulthood depending on care conditions, diet and strain.
- Adult size: approximately 20 to 25 cm
- Recommended minimum volume: 250 to 300 litres
- Recommended frontage: at least 120 cm
A generous volume and ample floor space are important to allow the fish to move around comfortably and to minimise territorial stress.
3. Water parameters
This species prefers clean, well-oxygenated water with a moderate to slow current. A slightly subdued lighting environment is often beneficial to help the fish feel at ease and bring out its beautiful colours.
- Temperature: 22 to 26°C
- pH: 6.0 to 7.5
- Hardness: soft to moderately hard
- Care: regular water changes
Stable conditions are essential. It is best to avoid sudden temperature fluctuations or stressful cohabitation.
4. Diet
The Channa "Laos Fireback" is a carnivore. It generally accepts a diet consisting of frozen prey, invertebrates and suitable meat-based foods.
- earthworms
- shrimps
- mussels
- insects
- nutrient-rich frozen foods
- possibly meat pellets, depending on the individual
A varied diet helps maintain good overall health, balanced growth and vibrant colouring.
5. Ideal tank setup
The décor should recreate a natural, safe and structured environment. This species particularly enjoys tanks with plenty of hiding places.
- Substrate: fine sand or dark soil
- Decor: roots, branches, stable stones, dead leaves
- Plants: hardy or floating, depending on the layout
- Light: moderate to subdued
- Cover: essential
A dark, natural décor particularly highlights the reflections of this shape.
6. Tankmates
Compatibility remains a delicate matter. This fish is not suited to a standard community aquarium. Small fish, invertebrates and overly docile species are at risk of becoming stressed or being preyed upon.
- Recommended tankmates: none, or a pair in a suitable tank
- To avoid: small fish, shrimp, shy fish
- Community tank: not recommended
7. Breeding
As with other Channa species, breeding is possible under the right conditions, but it requires experience, stability and, above all, a truly compatible pair. During the breeding season, territorial behaviour can become significantly more pronounced.
8. Why choose the Channa "Laos Fireback"?
- for its spectacular and unusual appearance
- for its intense colours and impressive presence
- to observe a fascinating predator in a dedicated tank
- to create an original, calm and highly decorative aquarium
9. AquaBota Tips
Channa sp. "Laos Fireback" is ideal for an aquarist wishing to keep a characterful fish in a well-designed, dedicated tank. We recommend a spacious tank, rich in hiding places, with regular maintenance and a varied meat-based diet.
Please note: this species is not suitable for a standard community aquarium and requires serious maintenance, particularly due to its territorial behaviour and tendency to jump.
