Polypterus endlicherii L
Bichir "ornate" - large prehistoric fish from Central Africa
Polypterus ornatipinnis, also known as the ornate bichir, is one of the most beautiful members of the Polypteridae family. Native to the Congo Basin and adjacent areas, it can be recognised by its mottled black and yellow patterns and segmented dorsal fins, typical of bichirs.
Behaviour & maintenance
This semi-nocturnal fish spends most of its time at the bottom of the aquarium, hidden under roots or rocks. It is calm, but an opportunistic predator: it will eat anything that fits in its mouth. It should therefore be kept with companions of sufficient size.
- Provide a large, well-covered floor tank (they can jump).
- Multiple hiding places and sieved areas recommended.
- Good oxygenation of the water and access to the surface to breathe (partial air breathing).
Diet
Carnivorous: appreciates protein-rich foods such as worms, small thawed fish, mussels, prawns, sinking sticks for carnivores, etc. A varied diet is essential for good growth.

Aquabota tip
Close the aquarium tightly! Bichirs are excellent climbers and can escape through the smallest openings. Their mixed breathing makes them seek the surface regularly. Make sure you offer them peace and quiet, hiding places and quality food.
