Trichopodus trichopterus "Marble" (4-5 cm)
Marbled three-spot gourami – elegant and easy in community aquariums
Trichopodus trichopterus, often called the “three-spot gourami”, is a popular species from Southeast Asia. The “Marble” variety shows an irregular marbled pattern on a light or dark base, making it one of the most decorative domesticated forms.
Behavior & care
Main points to remember:
- Generally peaceful fish, suitable for many community aquariums.
- Males can be territorial with each other – keep a single male or a well-sized group.
- Occupies mainly the upper and middle water layers; with its labyrinth organ it can breathe atmospheric air at the surface.
Feeding
Omnivore:
- Quality flakes and pellets for tropical fish
- Supplements: Artemia, daphnia, bloodworms – for variety
- Plant matter: accepts some vegetable foods, but not in excess
Water parameters
- Temperature: 22 - 28 °C (aim for 24 - 26 °C for best results)
- pH: 6.5 - 8.0 (quite tolerant)
- GH: adaptable – moderate hardness is usually fine
- KH: moderate
Thanks to its robustness, this variety is also considered a good choice for beginners.
Décor & environment
Suggested layout:
- An aquarium of at least 80 L is recommended for a group.
- Floating plants or tall stems to soften the light and provide resting areas near the surface
- Sand or gravel, with open swimming space and more densely planted areas for shelter
- A tight-fitting cover is essential: this fish can jump and often visits the surface.
