Macropodus opercularis
Paradise fish - robust, colourful and easy to keep
Macropodus opercularis, or Paradise Fish, was one of the first tropical species introduced to the aquarium trade. Native to Asia, it is renowned for its magnificent blue and red reflections and its great resistance to temperature variations. It's an ideal fish for beginners looking for a colourful, lively aquarium.
1. Behaviour & maintenance
Lively, curious and sometimes territorial, especially between adult males. It should be kept in an aquarium of at least 100 litres, with plenty of natural plants and hiding places. Prefers slow-moving water and calm areas at the surface for building its bubble nest.
2. Water parameters
- Temperature: 18-26°C
- pH: 6.5-7.8
- GH: 5-15 °dGH
- KH: 3-10 °KH
- Minimum volume: 100 L for a couple
3. Diet
Omnivorous to carnivorous: flakes, pellets, artemia, bloodworms, daphnia and aquatic insects. Find out more about our foods for tropical fish.
