Heros efasciatus, also known as Green Severum, is a large Amazonian cichlid highly prized for its tolerance, elegant green/yellow coat, and compatibility with other large, calm fish. It is often used as a peaceful alternative to large African cichlids in community aquariums in South America.

Behaviour and maintenance

This cichlid is :

• Sociable in young groups, forms pairs when mature
• Territorial during reproduction, otherwise rather calm
• Highly intelligent: recognises its caretaker and interacts with him.

Diet

Omnivorous, mainly vegetarian:

• Granules for cichlids (floating or sinking)
• Poached vegetables: courgette, peas, spinach
• Occasionally: bloodworms, krill, artemia, etc.

• Temperature: 25 - 29°C
• pH: 6.0 - 7.5
• GH: 4 - 12 °dGH
• KH: 3 - 8 °KH
• Conductivity: 100 - 250 µS

It tolerates slightly hard, stable water. A powerful filter and regular water changes are recommended.

Decor and environment

Ideally :

• Fine sand or smooth substrate
• Hardy plants: Anubias, Crinum, Echinodorus
• Hiding places: roots, stones, coconut palms
