Pseudotropheus sp. "Elongatus" Chewere is a magnificent variety of mbuna cichlid native to Lake Malawi (Chewere Reef area). With a body longer than the average Pseudotropheus, it is distinguished by a coat that is often bluish in males and vertical stripes in juveniles or females.
Behaviour & maintenance
- A moderately aggressive species, typical of rocky mbuna.
- Best kept in a group with one male for every several females, or in a homogeneous group to reduce aggression.
- Compatible with other mbuna of a similar size: keep the setting well structured to limit conflicts.
Diet
- Predominantly herbivorous omnivore: prefer plant-rich foods (spirulina) and limit animal proteins to avoid digestive problems.
- Supplements: small quantities of quality live or frozen food.
Water quality
- Temperature: 22 - 26°C
- pH: 7.5 - 8.5 (hard, alkaline water typical of Lake Malawi)
- High hardness: GH / KH adapted to limestone rocks or Lake Malawi-type decor.
Decor & environment
- Predominantly rocky setting: cracks, hiding places between rocks, sandy soil or fine gravel.
- Minimum recommended volume: around 120-150 litres for a group, depending on the size and structure of the tank.
- Ensure good filtration, oxygenation and well-defined areas for territories.

Aquabota tip
To fully appreciate the bluish colouring of this shape, choose a dark or charcoal-grey background and moderate lighting. Introduce it into a well-cycled tank and structure the decor to limit direct sight lines between individuals and encourage natural behaviour. Change the water regularly (~20% / week) and avoid mixing it with much larger or more aggressive species.
