Placidochromis electra "Likoma" is a superb local variety of Utaka (area close to the rock/sand bottom) endemic to Lake Malawi, around Likoma Island. Adult males are bright metallic blue with two conspicuous black stripes, while females are more subdued. The sale size here is 7-9 cm, corresponding to young specimens still growing.

Behaviour & maintenance

• Reputed to be relatively peaceful among Utakas, but may remain territorial in the presence of a single dominant male.
• Ideal in groups with one male for several females (harem) or in homogeneous groups to dilute any aggression.
• Habitat: sandy/rocky areas, with the need for free-swimming zones.

Diet

Omnivore to carnivore: accepts quality flakes or pellets, with supplements of frozen or live food (worms, small crustaceans) for good growth and colouration.

Water quality

• Temperature: 24-27°C (estimated).
• pH: 7.8-8.5 (alkaline water typical of Malawi).
• Hardness: medium to high GH, conductivity suitable for Malawian cichlids.

Setting & environment

• Sandy soil or fine gravel, numerous rocks arranged to create hiding places, but also free-swimming areas.
• Minimum recommended volume: around 150 L for a small group, to be adapted according to the surface area and length of the tank.
• To be introduced into an already cycled tank: give priority to space and good social behaviour.

To take full advantage of this species' beautiful blue colouring, choose a dark or neutral background, limit the number of aggressive varieties in the tank and keep a group rather than a single individual. Make sure you change the water regularly (around 20%/week) and introduce them once the tank has stabilised.
