Neolamprologus brichardi "Kiku" (4-5 cm)

Tanganyika cichlid - slender shape, veiled fins, lives in colonies

Neolamprologus brichardi "Kiku", also known as the Tanganyika Princess, is a variant of the famous N. brichardi, native to Lake Tanganyika. This strain is distinguished by its pearly colours, filament-like fins and colonial behaviour, which is unique among African cichlids.

Easy to maintain, it is perfect for a well-structured Tanganyika community aquarium. Its social behaviour is fascinating, especially during reproduction.

Behaviour & maintenance

  • Live in pairs or family colonies
  • Defend their territory but can cohabit with calm, non-rival species
  • Young remain around their parents and help defend the nest
  • Very educational behaviour for observation
Provide a highly structured rocky setting with numerous cavities and caves.

Feeding

Micro-predator / omnivore with carnivorous tendencies:

  • Granules and flakes suitable for African cichlids
  • Pupils of artemia, krill, mysis, red worms
  • Occasional plant supplements (spirulina)
A varied diet promotes colour and reproduction.

Water quality

  • Temperature: 24 - 27°C
  • pH: 8.0 - 9.0
  • GH: 10 - 20 °dGH
  • KH : 8 - 15 °KH
  • Conductivity: 250 - 350 µS

Prefer hard, well-oxygenated and stable water. Minerals play a key role in reproduction.

Decor & environment

  • Fine sand
  • Stacked stones forming caves and interstices
  • Optional plants: Anubias, Microsorum on rock
  • Recommended volume: 100 - 150 L for a couple or trio
