Gastromyzon ctenocephalus

Stream loach – specialist in fast-flowing, oxygen-rich waters

Gastromyzon ctenocephalus is a small Asian loach that lives naturally in clear, cool, highly oxygenated streams. Its flattened body and sucker-like fins allow it to cling to rocks in areas with strong currents.

A fascinating species for river tank aquariums, it requires powerful water movement and clean, oxygen-rich water. Ideal for aquarists wishing to recreate a dynamic natural biotope.

Behaviour and maintenance

  • Peaceful – compatible with calm species
  • Gregarious – keep in groups of at least 5 individuals
  • Slightly territorial towards conspecifics (natural hierarchy)

Recommended maintenance in a specific river tank or community aquarium suitable for cool, oxygenated water.

Feeding

Algivorous / microphagous

  • Biofilm and natural microalgae
  • Sinking vegetable pellets
  • Supplements: spirulina, poached vegetables

A mature aquarium rich in biofilm is essential in the long term.

Water quality

  • Temperature: 20–25 °C
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • GH: 5–10 °dGH
  • Current: Strong

Very sensitive to nitrates and lack of oxygen. Powerful filtration and continuous circulation recommended.

Decor and environment

  • Numerous flat stones and pebbles
  • Strong current area
  • Sand + pebble substrate

Moderate lighting promoting the development of natural algae on surfaces.
