Synodontis flavitaeniatus (5-7 cm)
African striped catfish ("Pyjama Syno") for freshwater aquarium
The Synodontis flavitaeniatus is a catfish native to the Congo Basin (Democratic Republic of Congo) renowned for its striped coat of yellow and orange-brown stripes. This species is appreciated for its peaceful behaviour and natural decoration, perfect for a well-structured community aquarium.
Behaviour & maintenance
A few important points to remember:
- A relatively calm species, best kept in groups (at least 4-5 individuals) to encourage natural behaviour.
- Shy of flames or fish that are too lively; prefer relatively peaceful companions.
- Moderate bottom-dweller, likes hiding places (tubes, roots, rocks).
Diet
Omnivorous :
- Sinking pellets or granules suitable for bottom-feeding fish.
- Complementary frozen or live food: mud worms, artemia, mysis.
- A little vegetable matter or poached vegetables for balance.
Water quality
- Temperature: around 24 - 28°C.
- pH: 6.5 - 8.0.
- GH/KH: tolerant, but clean, well-filtered water essential.
Decor & environment
To integrate well:
- Fine sand or neutral gravel to protect its sensitive barbels.
- Numerous hiding places: roots, tubes, caves. Dark areas where it will feel at ease.
- Effective filtration and good oxygenation - this species appreciates water with moderate movement.
- Recommended volume: minimum ~100 L or more for a group.

AquaBota tip
To fully appreciate its striped coat, choose a dark or neutral decor and dim the lights to highlight it. Make sure you introduce food at the bottom of the aquarium (sinking pellets) and avoid companions that are too aggressive or too small. Finally, make sure you change the water regularly: this hardy species appreciates stable water quality to express its colours and avoid fin problems.
