Betta splendens (Fighting fish)
Colourful, solitary and fascinating Asian fish - ideal for planted aquariums
The Betta splendens, also known as the fighting fish, is native to Southeast Asia. Famous for its bright colours and spectacular fins, it is one of the most popular fish in aquarium keeping. It lives alone but is curious and interactive with its keeper.
1. Behaviour & care
A territorial and solitary species. Males should be kept alone, while females can live in small groups (sisterhood). Prefer a well-planted aquarium with little movement and plenty of hiding places. The Betta likes to breathe at the surface thanks to its labyrinth organ.
2. Water parameters
- Temperature: 25-28°C
- pH: 6.0-7.5
- GH: 4-10 °dGH
- KH: 2-6 °KH
- Minimum volume: 15-20 L (per individual)
3. Diet
