Betta splendens (Fighting fish)

Colourful, solitary and fascinating Asian fish - ideal for planted aquariums

The Betta splendens, also known as the fighting fish, is native to Southeast Asia. Famous for its bright colours and spectacular fins, it is one of the most popular fish in aquarium keeping. It lives alone but is curious and interactive with its keeper.

1. Behaviour & care

A territorial and solitary species. Males should be kept alone, while females can live in small groups (sisterhood). Prefer a well-planted aquarium with little movement and plenty of hiding places. The Betta likes to breathe at the surface thanks to its labyrinth organ.

2. Water parameters

  • Temperature: 25-28°C
  • pH: 6.0-7.5
  • GH: 4-10 °dGH
  • KH: 2-6 °KH
  • Minimum volume: 15-20 L (per individual)

3. Diet

Carnivorous: artemia, bloodworms, daphnia and specific pellets for Betta. Find out more about our foods for Betta fish.

4. Technical specifications

Scientific name Betta splendens
Adult size 6-7 cm
Origin Southeast Asia (Thailand, Cambodia)
Behaviour Territorial, curious
Living zone Surface / environment

5. Varieties available

  • Long sail: classic and majestic
  • Halfmoon: 180° fins
  • Crowntail: crown-shaped fins
  • Plakat: short, more robust fins
  • Double Tail: symmetrical double tail

6. Breeding

The male builds a nest of bubbles on the surface to hold the eggs. Reproduction requires a stable temperature (27-28°C) and a separate tank. After laying, the male looks after the eggs until they hatch.

7. Compatibility

Never keep two males together. Compatible with calm species (rasboras, dwarf corydoras, snails, dwarf shrimps) in a well-planted, lightly stirred aquarium.
